03 June 09 - Capel Vale Cabernet’s rated highly in Big Red Wine Book

The 2007 Regional Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Merlot in the same range have both been awarded 91 points by Campbell Mattinson (Gourmet Traveller) and Gary Walsh in the Big Red Wine Book. Both the reviews are pasted below:

This version is complex - snapped twigs, blackcurrant, mulberries and gravel - but most importantly it has the oomph to make you ahh. Excellent carry of velvety tannin through the finish; indeed, it's an excellent wine.
91 points

It has developed beautifully in bottle, its flavours of dark chocolate, mint, blackcurrant and burnt toast now offering heaps to sink your teeth into. We're on board; it's an excellent wine.
91 points and "Authors Choice"

However, as you can see they were partial to one wine over the other awarding the Cabernet Merlot an "Authors Choice". This was explained with:

"Ok, we confess - for all the words, scores and ravings, sometimes the absolute best recommendation is a simple thumbs-up, 'nuff said. These are personal choices; they're the reds we'll be picking up the next time we're in the bottle shop or scanning the restaurant wine list.

Aiming to reflect all the nuances that make Margaret River reds so unique, the Pratten family searched for 5 years before finding their ideal vineyard site in 1999. Varieties typical of the Medoc in Bordeaux perform well on this terroir and the vineyard was particularly purchased by the Pratten family for these styles. Located in the Cowaramup area, in the central Margaret River region, the vineyard faces south west and is one of the few exposed to the strong cool ocean winds in the region.
